Mount Pinatubo

Beauty in Chaos

Overview

Famous the world over for the 1991 eruption that produced clouds of ash which blanketed the sky and buried the land, the second largest volcanic eruption of this century resulted in chaos and catastrophe that took years to recover from. Yet from the ashes rose an eerie, moon-like landscape of lahar, barren and bare, save for resurgent vegetation, a few wild pigs and chickens, and the sea-green, mineral beauty of Lake Pinatubo.

  • Board a 4×4 vehicle and experience a thrilling monster ride across Crow Valley, with its vast ash fields and rocky rivers, to reach the foot of the volcano.
  • Meet the Aetas, the indigenous inhabitants of the area, displaced due to the eruption, and slowly finding their way back home.
  • Hike through sandy cliffs and bush walk through mountain trails to reach Lake Pinatubo, the deepest lake in the Philippines, a turquoise caldera born out of the earth’s upheaval.
